Sending money home (remittances) is common in the diaspora. Costs differ a lot by provider, so compare before you send.

How transfers work

You send US dollars; the recipient gets Egyptian pounds (or USD in some accounts). You pay a fee PLUS a margin baked into the exchange rate — always compare the total cost, not just the advertised fee.

Common ways to send

Transfer apps (Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit), traditional services (Western Union, MoneyGram), and bank wires. Apps are often cheaper and faster; cash-pickup services help when the recipient has no bank account.

What you will usually need

A verified account, the recipient’s full name (matching their ID), and their bank/wallet details or a pickup location. Large amounts may need extra ID verification.
